Tiger Woods ensures No. 1 ranking going into the final tournament of the FedEx Cup with an 8-stroke win at the BMW Championship

It's been two years since the world's No. 1 golfer could put it on cruise control the way he did Sunday at the BMW Championship, his win capping a stellar stretch of events that will likely be remembered more for his failure at the PGA Championship.

Still, starting in late July at the Buick Open, Woods went 1-1-2-2-11-1 in the tournaments he played, a kind of run that only a few could fathom. It was his sixth victory of the year, 71st of his PGA Tour career, and gave him a whopping 10 wins by eight strokes or more.

To win three times in six tournaments might be a dream for some, but for Woods that domination has come to be expected.

And yet, it gets him very little as far as the FedEx Cup playoffs are concerned.

Woods will head to Atlanta for the Tour Championship in two weeks in first place in the standings, but hardly comfortable. Sort of like the Yankees winning Game 3 of the World Series in a blowout or the Patriots heading to the Super Bowl 18-0 -- you still have to finish it off.

Andy Murray loves New York, even if the feeling wasn?t exactly mutual Sunday night at the U.S. Open.

Murray had to play the role of the bad guy, ending American wild-card entry Taylor Dent?s improbable run with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

?Obviously the crowd wanted Taylor to win,? Murray said, ?but I played very well.?

The No. 2-seeded Murray is trying to become the first British man since the 1930s to win a Grand Slam singles title. The 195th-ranked Dent of Newport Beach, Calif.,

meanwhile, was thrilled to return to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2005?and even more pleased to win two matches.

Dent once was ranked as high as 21st, but he was told by doctors he might not be able to play professional tennis again after having three back operations.

?It?s nothing but positive for me. This is a huge step forward in my progression,? Dent said. ?I?m glad to be back, but I?m sorry I?m not sticking around.?

Rafael Nadal Injured still won the third round at the U.S. Open

Rafael Nadal was treated for a stomach muscle problem during his third-round victory at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

The No. 3-seeded Nadal beat No. 32 Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 in an all-Spaniard matchup.

Nadal already was comfortably ahead when both he and Almagro received treatment from trainers after the third game of the third set. Nadal had a patch applied to his

stomach, while Almagro had his back worked on.

Nadal wouldn?t discuss his health afterward.

?I don?t want to talk about injuries,? he said. ?Sorry. No, no. I am a little bit tired to talk about injuries.?

Nadal is a six-time major champion who is trying to complete a career Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Open.

Kim Clijsters beat Venus Williams at US Open

Kim Clijsters claimed her biggest win since coming out of retirement as she defeated third seed Venus Williams 6-0 0-6 6-4 in the US Open fourth round.

The former world number one, in her first Grand Slam for two years, breezed through the opening set with a flurry of powerful winners.

Williams regrouped and came blazing back, but was undone as the Belgian clung to a solitary break in the third.
